Wachsmuth & Krogmann has been importing fruit for over 200 years.
It was this tradition that brought about the trade in tinned pineapples.
We are a proud partner of Great Giant Pineapple. This partnership allows us to exclusively provide high quality pineapple from Indonesia in Germany.
We deliver container quantities to large retail chains, amongst others.
With more than 13,000 islands, Indonesia is the world’s largest archipelago and is also known as the “string of emeralds”. The most famous islands are Java and Sumatra. The population of Indonesia is about 250 million (2013). The tropical climate means it is dry from June to September with a rainy season from December to March and temperatures ranging from 20 to 30 °C. These are the perfect conditions for cultivating pineapples.
Pineapple cultivation started three decades ago in Lampung, Sumatra. Pineapples grow throughout the year – they do not depend on the season.
One plant takes about 18 months to produce a ripe pineapple with a second harvest being possible after a further 12 months. After this period the plants are cleared and the fields planted with new seeds.
Great Giant Pineapples
Great Giant Pineapples grows the Smooth Cayenne variety of pineapple on 75,000 hectares of land. This plantation is about twice the size of the German state of Schleswig-Holstein. 65,000 plats are grown per hectare.
Pineapples are harvested by hand and preserved in cans within three hours. The complete process – from the receiving station to sterilisation – takes just one hour and ensures the freshness of the canned fruit. Fruits are packaged in accordance with the USA’s Food and Drug Administration standards.
Great Giant Pineapples current employs around 14,000 people, both in the field and in the modern canning plant, to keep on top of the intensive work needed for cultivation and ensure the daily production capacity of about 42x 20’ containers can be met. This represents a daily harvest of about 70 tons of pineapple with perfect ripeness and colour.
The factory is certified by relevant organisations from around the world, e.g. IFS, BRT, BSCI, SA 800, etc.
At Wachsmuth & Krogmann we have been experts in the fruit trade for over 200 years and are proud of the excellent quality of the canned pineapples we import.
